15 Street Foods in Southeast Asia
| March 17, 2017
4. Kwek-kwek – Philippines
Kwek kwek is a common street food sold all over the Philippines. It’s basically a hard-boiled egg covered in orange batter made with annatto powder. It’s also sometimes confused with Tokneneng, which is pretty much the same thing, but one uses quail eggs and the other chicken eggs.
Just make sure you’re ordering the proper “egg” so you don’t end up eating Balut, which is another street food. Balut is a boiled egg containing a duck or chicken embryo which is nearly fully developed. A nasty surprise for those not expecting it.
