Battleship Island
While nothing sinister happened on this island, alternately called Hashima or Gunkanjima, it is creepy to visit a place that once was a site of industry and family life, but now lies completely abandoned.
This island, which lies about nine miles off the coast of Nagasaki, was developed as a home for undersea coal miners in the first half of the 20th century. It was abandoned in 1974, after the coal reserves dried up. Now, it’s been opened to tourists, and is an eerie place to explore.
