Life is Highway: The World’s Most Quintessential Road Trips
The Hana Highway, USA
Next time you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Hawaii, hop in a car and go for a 2.5-hour ride along the 52-mile Hana Highway between Kahului and Hana. It is the best way to take in the breathtaking waterfalls, gorgeous beaches, and wild rainforests of the 50th state. Drive carefully though, as Hana Highway is known for its sharp turns and blind passes.
The Causeway Coastal Route, Ireland
It’s not fair for such a small country as Ireland to have two road trips on this list, but the Causeway Coastal Route is too beautiful a drive to ignore. This 120-mile trip will take you through Northern Ireland from Belfast to Londonderry, and offers some otherworldly sights like the Giant’s Causeway — an area of basalt columns that’s widely regarded as one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the world.
The Karakoram Highway, China/Pakistan
If you’re a thrill seeker who likes a challenge rather than just a flat and boring strip of road, you might enjoy the 20-hour drive along the Karakoram Highway connecting China and Pakistan.
Known as the world’s highest paved road at an altitude of more than 15,300 feet, this remote 800-mile long road is prone to floods, landslides, and herds of animals that block your way. However, it also offers an amazing view of the Karakorum mountain range, Khunjerub National Park. and the Hunza Valley.
