5. Sumbawa, Indonesia

Sumbawa is a small island in the Indonesian archipelago that has been passed over for years as tourists head past it to busier areas, like Bali or Lombok. Sumbawa is harder to get to and consequently has remained much more isolated from the tourist crowds.

While it’s always been a popular surf destination, there are amazing beaches that deserve recognition, along with plenty of other interesting sights –  like the massive inland volcano, Mount Tambora. Buses and small vans are the best way to get around here. Transportation hasn’t really caught up with tourism yet.
