The Best Comforting Drinks for Fall from Around the World
| October 17, 2018
Sahlab
Sahlab is a unique drink that can be found throughout the Middle East — particularly in Iran, Lebanon, and even Turkey. Like many warm fall beverages, its base is warm frothed milk, to which salep is added, which gives the drink its characteristic taste, but also gives it a unique fluffy, creamy texture. Salep is made of powdered orchid root, and has been a popular ingredient in Ottoman cuisine for centuries. It’s prized for its unique thickening ability — like cornstarch, it easily forms a thick, creamy sauce. In sahlab, the creamy mixture is then cut with rose water, to form a sweet, flavorful beverage that’s enjoyed throughout the fall and winter.
