Shell Grotto
Shell Grotto was discovered in 1835 by a worker in a field near the seaside town of Margate. While he was digging, the worker hit the entrance of the grotto, and volunteered his young son to be lowered down into the hole to see what was down there.
The little boy came up with an amazing story of a grotto, covered floor to ceiling in shells. Although many of the shells were British in origin, a few types came from as far away as the Caribbean. Even now, no one knows why this grotto was built.
