10 Things I Hate About Traveling
9. Bank Fees and Currency Management
Shall we change this Baht before we leave Thailand or exchange for Ringgit in Malaysia? Shall I withdraw cash from an ATM or shall I carry dollars with me and use a Bureau de Change? The truth is: you’ll have to research!
I’m not going to suggest a specific credit/debit card, as the possibilities are vast depending on where you come from. But you’ll have to take this information into consideration or you’ll get home and realize you paid a lot more than you should have.
I particularly use a British credit card with no withdrawal fees and it’s bliss! Still, if you’re in Thailand for instance, all ATMs charge from 150 to 200 baht per withdrawal, which is quite annoying. Apparently some American banks refund those fees, but in my case, I just tried to pay with my card when I had the chance or just take out a lot of money in one go.
