11. Krampus – Austria
Krampus is an Eastern European mythological character that’s been a part of the Christmas story for centuries. Krampus is a demonic figure who punishes children for misbehaving, giving them coal instead of presents during the Christmas season.
December 5th is known in many places as Krampusnacht (Krampus Night) – the night before the Feast of St. Nicholas, where Krampus stalks the streets looking for naughty children. It’s customary to offer Krampus a taste of schnapps if you run into him on Krampusnacht.
