5. The Overlook Hotel – The Shining
The Overlook Hotel, where Jack Torrance and his family come to spend the winter in The Shining, was based on a real hotel called The Stanley Hotel, in Colorado, which original book author Stephen King stayed at himself.
In the movie version, a hotel called Timberline Lodge was chosen instead of the Stanley Hotel to serve as the exterior view of The Overlook. Interiors were recreated in a studio, and natural features such as the maze were added in post-productions.
