12. Turku, Finland
The islands in the Archipelago Sea have long been a well-kept secret among Finnish families — many of whom own private islands along the 25,000 miles of shoreline. The nearest inland city that many people use as a hub for their holidays is Turku, a medieval city with a thoroughly modern food scene.
Turku is home to festivals all year round, from the Medieval Markets in July to the Down by the Laituri rock music festival. Make sure you hit up the Kauppahalli, a farmer’s market with plenty of local produce, meat, and cheese.
