14. Newfoundland Screech
Newfoundland Screech is an essential part of the ceremony known as a “screech-in” which inaugurates foreigners into the culture of Newfoundland. If a non-islander wishes to be considered an honorary Newfoundlander, they must drink a shot of screech (which is a term for any liquor with 40% ABV or higher – usually rum, but sometimes moonshine), then plant a kiss on a cod.
