America’s 15 Best Towns for Halloween

Salem, Massachusetts

If you read The Crucible in high school, chances are you know about Salem already.

In the 1690s, the residents of the newly-built Salem rooted out so-called ‘witches’ from their midst with a series of horrific witch trials. These trials put many innocent women to death, and made neighbor distrust neighbor for many years afterwards.

Now, the town pays homage to their macabre history with a month-long celebration of the occult. Every October, over 500,000 people attend the Psychic Fair and Witchcraft Expo, which culminates with the Salem Witches’ Halloween Ball at the Hawthorne Hotel, where people gather to summon the spirits together.
