8. The Pantheon, Rome
No building encompasses the varied history of Rome like the Pantheon does. Originally built by the Emperor Hadrian, it was constructed on the site of an earlier Roman temple commissioned by Augustus. The enormous porch leads in to the central rotunda, which features an oculus that is open to the sky.
