Humpback Covered Bridge
Location: Western Virginia
Originally built in 1857, this is the oldest remaining covered bridge in the state. Its sweet “humpback” shape is caused because the middle was built higher than either end. Designed to last longer than its three predecessors (the majority destroyed by floors, and all of them not covered), this little bridge has weathered well over a century.
Fun fact: This sort of bridge was also known as a “kissing bridge,” because when a carriage went behind the shelter of the walls it was easier to smooch unobserved during the modest Victorian period. D’awww.
