10. Easter Island – Chile
Do you know those big imposing statues of heads, lined up along the coast of some legendary island? Well, that island is called Easter Island, or Rapa Nui in the local language. It has a population of around 6,500 people and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
The massive heads, called moais, were created to represent their ancestors. However, they also contributed to the deforestation of the island and the downfall of the indigenous people. It got worse when Polynesian rats were introduced to the environment and multiple plants became extinct.
