11. Surfing Big Waves – Waimea Bay, Hawaii
Polynesian people have been surfing for hundreds of years, but only in the beginning of the 20th century did it become mainstream. Of course, it didn’t take long for some crazy people to start surfing big waves.
Waimea Bay became the favorite spot for big wave surfing for several years and it’s where the Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau has been held since 1984. The contest has only happened nine times since then as the swell needs a minimum height of 20 feet.
