Mexico’s Naica crystal caves were formed over tens of thousands of years but went undiscovered until they were in in 2000 by a mining company. The unknown bacteria found in the gypsum crystals stumped scientists who could only draw genetic parallels to volcanic soils found in Russia, Australia and Spain.
