1. Oymyakon, Siberia, Russia
Officially, this is the coldest place on Earth that is permanently inhabited. Since it’s too cold to support crops, the approximately 500 residents exist primarily on meat and fish. The only connection to the outside world is the M56 Kolyma Highway, which is also referred to as the “Road of Bones” thanks to the prisoners who died during its creation and were buried beneath it. Oh, and it also happens to plummet below -50° F, so if cold, secluded and somewhat creepy are your things, Oymyakon’s got you covered.
